China: Weedkiller firm fined for polluting watercourses

A COURT in eastern China has fined a chemicals firm 75 million yuan (£7.8m) and imprisoned staff and contractors for polluting streams.

The fine levied by the Longyou county court on Tuesday against Jinfanda Biochemical Company, which makes glyphosate weedkiller, was the largest for a polluter in Zhejiang province.

The Longyou county government said Jinfanda hired four unqualified companies that dumped 35,000 tons of hazardous waste into streams.

The court convicted Jinfanda on May 18 after a lengthy trial. Besides the chemicals firm’s penalty, one of the contractors was fined 4m yuan (£420,000).

The court also sentenced 18 defendants to prison for between 17 months and six years, the government said. The individuals were ordered to pay fines ranging from 10,000 yuan (£1,000) to 1 million yuan (£105,000).

In December, a court in neighbouring Jiangsu province ordered six firms to pay 160m yuan (£16.8m) for discharging waste chemicals into rivers.
