Spring Walk for Peace anti-nuclear marchers join Glasgow CND rally before hitting Faslane home of Trident

Edinburgh campaigners against nuclear weapons and the replacement of Trident stop off at a Glasgow CND rally on their Spring Walk for Peace to nuclear submarine base at Faslane

Dozens of campaigners on an 80-mile march across Scotland from Edinburgh to Faslane to protest against Trident nuclear weapons will join a Scottish CND rally in Glasgow today.

Hundreds of supporters waved the Spring Walk for Peace off from the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday.

As the marchers approached Glasgow yesterday, Mike Arnott of Dundee TUC told the Morning Star: “Morale is high among the three dozen walkers, despite a total absence of sun since Tuesday.

“From teenagers to veterans in their eighties, the campaign against Trident is in enthusiastic hands.”

Scottish CND chairman Alan Mackinnon recalled Scotland’s Long Walk for Peace in 2006 when hundreds marched from Faslane to urge the Scottish parliament to take a stand against the replacement of Trident.

“Their objective was achieved in June 2007 when the Parliament voted overwhelmingly to oppose Trident replacement,” he said.

“In 2013 Holyrood took a stronger stance, opposing Trident itself. The Spring Walk is now taking this message to the gates of the nuclear base at Faslane.”

Glasgow’s Lord Provost Sadie Docherty, Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish TUC deputy general secretary Dave Moxham are the main speakers for today’s rally.
Assemble 10.30 in George Square, march off 11am through city for rally in George Square at 12 noon.
