Football: Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen at Parkhead

Celtic got their season back on track with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Parkhead, but not without making their fans sweat a little.

Ronny Deila’s team went into the match without a win in four games and having been knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers.

Defender Jason Denayer gave the home side the lead in the seventh minute with a fortuitous goal and forward Kris Commons made it two with a deflected shot seconds after the break, setting up what looked like being an easy victory.

But Dons striker David Goodwillie reduced the deficit just after the hour mark to make it a nervy ending, with Aberdeen claiming they should have had a penalty when Niall McGinn’s free-kick appeared to be handled by Commons inside the box.

Celtic travel to Austria on Wednesday for their first Europa League group clash against Salzburg the following day, and Deila will know further improvement is needed if they are to make a better fist of that competition.

Saturday’s win helped Celtic eat into Hamilton, Dundee United and Inverness’s lead over them.

The former two teams played out a 2-2 draw, while Inverness lost 3-1 at Partick Thistle.
