Hospital worker and trade unionist of 40 yrs wins STUC award for mental health work

A PRESTIGIOUS STUC award will be presented to Lesley McCallum from healthcare union Unite today.

Ms McCallum has been a senior shop steward and equality rep at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for the past 19 years and an active trade union member for over 40 years.

Her commitment will be rewarded with the One Workplace Equality Award, which will be presented to her at the STUC conference in Ayr.

The STUC explained that Ms McCallum has worked tirelessly over the course of her career to raise awareness on mental health and to place that issue firmly on the political agenda.

“It is only after years of campaigning and awareness raising by committed and dedicated people like Lesley that we have seen the stigma start to be tackled,” said STUC general secretary Grahame Smith.

In her extensive career, Ms McCallum has also been involved in numerous campaigns, including on wider disability issues, breast cancer and domestic violence and prides herself on showing solidarity for other workers and other unions.
