Doctors demanded an end to the government’s £20 billion NHS England cuts programme yesterday, warning that the service would plunge deeper into crisis.
The Royal College of Physicians issued the plea to politicians as they prepared for the party conference season, which begins with Labour next weekend.
In a dire warning on the price of years of competition-based government reforms, RCP president Professor Jane Dacre said the service faced “an impending financial crisis” with hospitals already “under-resourced and under pressure.”
She pleaded for an end to years of NHS shake-ups and demanded that politicians commit to “a long-term vision” with care “free at the point of delivery.”
“The NHS has suffered badly from the instability caused by constant reorganisation, and funding policies that have made it harder for hospitals, GPs and community services to work together to improve patient care,” warned Prof Dacre.
