New app sees discrimination complaints soar nearly 270%

ANTI-DISCRIMINATION campaign Kick It Out boasted yesterday that its new mobile app had caused reports of nasty fan behaviour to soar nearly fourfold.

There were 284 complaints submitted last year compared to 77 the year before, Kick It Out said.

Two-thirds of the complaints related to racism, one-fifth were faith-based — all but one anti-semitic — and 8 per cent related to homophobia.

Kick It Out released their mobile phone application with a reporting function in July 2013.

A spokesman said: “Just over a year on, the app has made an immediate impact as it has become Kick It Out’s most-used reporting mechanism relating to incidents within professional football — responsible for 38 per cent of complaints registered with the organisation at this level of the game.”

Half of all complaints related to social media abuse.
