A motion unanimously passed at TUC Congress attacked politicians for coming up with “no serious proposals” to tackle the disproportionate use of the powers against people from ethnic minorities.
“There is a deafening silence and BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) communities have been left to deal with the consequences,” it said.
Community delegate Carol Hodgson said her brother was frisked by police in an affluent part of Birmingham “every time he goes jogging, so much so that now he never comes (to his home town) to see the mighty Aston Villa.”
Unison delegate Margaret Greer said a family member had been stopped and searched on his way home from the shops because “he fitted a description” of a suspected robber.
“I think we can all agree that the colour of your skin is not evidence enough,” she told delegates.
Fire Brigades Union rep Micky Nicholas said that, on more than one occasion, police attending fires had questioned the authenticity of black firefighters.
