Premier League backs away from WSL takeover for now

THE Premier League will revisit the idea of a future takeover of the Women’s Super League in 12 months’ time.

It was reported yesterday that Premier League clubs were presented with the findings of a feasibility study at their shareholders’ meeting in London last week.

The league has reportedly not turned its back on plans to assume control of the WSL from the Football Association, but it was felt that the timing was not right.

A decision was taken to look at the issue again in another year, with dialogue to continue in the meantime.

Attendances in the WSL have improved this season, partly on the back of England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals last summer.

But there are growing concerns regarding a lack of investment by clubs in their women’s teams, which have faced regular cancellations due to abysmal pitch conditions.

The FA has said that it would not stand in the way of such a takeover once the “long-term feasibility” of a takeover is established.
