Germanwings pilot strike to go ahead

LUFTHANSA said yesterday that a six-hour strike by pilots of its low-cost subsidiary Germanwings will go ahead tomorrow after talks with management collapsed.

“We regret the strike announcement by pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit,” Lufthansa said.

“Just hours before the scheduled talks were due to begin, the union said there would be a strike on Friday if an agreement was not reached.”

“We’re very disappointed that a strike could not be averted,” said personnel boss Bettina Volkens.

The union said all Germanwings flights departing from German airports would be affected by the strike from 6am until noon local time.

The pilots want management to maintain a scheme that allows them to retire early at 55 and still keep some of their pay until they reach the age at which state pension payments start.

About 700 of the Lufthansa group’s more than 9,000 pilots work at Germanwings.
