Gremio banned from cup competition

Team kicked out after fans’ racial abuse

Gremio were kicked out of the Brazlian Cup on Wednesday after fans racially abused Santos’ goalkeeper last week.

The two clubs were meant to play the second leg on Wednesday, with Santos winning the first 2-0, but the Superior Court of Sporting Justice (STJD) postponed the match so a ruling could be discussed.

The penalty handed out by the five-member commission is the toughest ever against a Brazilian side whose fans were accused of racism.

One fan, who was caught on camera shouting “monkey” at the goalkeeper Aranha, lost her job at a police hospital in Rio di Janeiro and could still face criminal charges.

Gremio have also been fined 50,000 Reais (£13,500) but will appeal the decision, with the appeal being heard in two weeks according to STJD spokesman Lima de Amorim.
