West Ham manager Sam Allardyce declared yesterday that his side would be going all out for the FA Cup and the Premier League over the remainder of the season after a 3-0 victory over Hull.
Allardyce admitted that his team’s efforts in the FA Cup on Tuesday night had left the team a bit lethargic in the first half and that his side were fortunate to go into the break on level terms.
“We were a little lucky we did not lose a goal in that period,” said Allardyce, who admitted it was a bit disappointing for the fans after Tuesday.
However, he was pleased with getting the clean sheet, pointing out that more clean sheets would mean more wins as his team always score goals.
Asked about the success this season, he said the major factor was recruitment. “The players recruited this season have made such a difference,” Allardyce replied.
Yesterday’s game showed just how vital Alex Song is to this West Ham team. Distinctly off his game in the first half, the former Arsenal midfielder effectively finished this game with two killer passes in the second half.
It was Hull who had started the game but failed to take their chances and you sensed the Tigers were going to pay the price for those missed chances in the first half with a number of the West Ham players looking like they were still recovering from the FA Cup tie victory over Everton.
Allardyce must have had a few words to say at the break as his team came out and took control of the game. Instrumental in the transformation were the previously lacklustre Song and Stewart Downing who suddenly came back to life.
Andy Carroll opened the scoring in the 49th minute before substitute Morgan Amalfitano chipped over the spread-eagled Allan McGregor to double the lead in the 68th minute.
Three minutes later Song put Downing through to fire home under McGregor.
