Sequel breathes fire (and ice) into beloved dragon franchise

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (U)

Directed by Dean DeBlois

by Maria Duarte

This long-awaited sequel breaks the mould by being even more exciting and enthralling than the first How to Train Your Dragon, which proved a massive box-office hit.

Written and directed by Dean DeBlois once again, it picks up the story of Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless five years after their last adventure.

While out exploring, the pair discover an ice cave which houses hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  They end up at the centre of a deadly battle to save their community and protect the peace.

Smart, funny and moving the film deals eloquently with the issues of loss, estrangement and manning up.

The youngsters who were at my Sunday morning screening were totally enthralled and didn’t seem to notice or care that Hiccup and Astrid (America Ferrera) sound like they're from the US while their family and friends are Scottish.
