Parliament's security guards sport picket placards

TORY MPs faced a rebellion yesterday from the people who keep them safe while they spout anti-union rhetoric — Parliament’s security guards.

Dozens guarded every entrance to the Palace of Westminster from the early hours as usual.

But this time security staff had swapped their official uniforms for “official picket” placards and the bright yellow vests and arm bands of civil servants’ union PCS.

Keeping watch at Parliament’s carriage gates, Julie Goodman told the Star how Tory MPs motivated her and colleagues to come out.

“We look after them but they’re not looking after us,” she said.

“Our wages are falling further every month as they grow richer.

“Now we’ve got to make difference choices about everyday things like whether to put on the heating on.”

Ms Goodman explained she now buys clothes from auction website ebay, while her colleagues with children are “really struggling.”

The guards were joined by other parliamentary workers as around 300 PCS members at the Palace joined the massive public sector pay strike.
