Poland: Tusk's government survives confidence vote

POLISH Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s right-wing government survived a confidence vote today, winning a vote by 236-155 in the Sejm lower house of parliament.

Nationalist Law and Justice party leader Jaros?aw Kaczynski had called for the vote over a series of embarrassing leaks of conversations by some leaders.

Mr Kaczynski accused the prime minister of dragging Poland into a political crisis and of general incompetence in leading the country.

Interior Minister Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz also survived a separate confidence vote called by the opposition.

The crisis was sparked last month when weekly magazine Wprost released secretly-recorded conversations of top leaders.

In one, National Bank of Poland president Marek Belka and Mr Sienkiewicz were heard discussing how the central bank could help the governing party win re-election in 2015.

In another, Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski was heard saying that Poland’s alliance with the US is worthless.

President Bronislaw Komorowski reacted by stressing the importance of the alliance.
