Continental Cup Football: Hosts Birmingham sent crashing out after Bristol run riot

Birmingham 0
Bristol Academy 5

A hat-trick Natalia Pablos Sanchon helped Bristol Academy comfortably beat Birmingham and sent the hosts out of the Continental Cup  with a crushing 5-0 defeat yesterday afternoon.

Bristol’s win meant the visitors leap-frogged Birmingham into second place but due to Arsenal securing the best runners-up, finishing with 12 points in Group One, neither team progressed to the semi-finals.

Bristol opened the scoring after 10 minutes when the home side failed to clear a corner and Natasha Harding coolly slotted past goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.

The hosts should have grabbed an equaliser soon after but Melissa Lawley failed to connect properly from a Hannah Keryakoplis pull back.

And they were punished 10 minutes later when Pablos Sanchon got her first of the afternoon, lobbing Spencer and doubling Bristol’s lead.

Harding then took her tally to two goals eight minutes before half time.

Laura Del Rio slipped the striker through who rounded the goalkeeper and was left with the simple task of tapping the ball into the empty net and sending her side into the break three goals up.

Harding turned provider 12 minutes into the second half when her pass put Pablos Sanchon through, who then rolled in her second and team’s fourth.

The away side then missed a penalty when Spencer guessed correctly to deny Del Rio but Pablos Sanchon completed her hat-trick deep into stoppage time when she once again lobbed Spencer.
