Islamists on the rise in Nigeria as violence flares ahead of presidential elections

VIOLENCE has erupted in Nigeria ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections this week with the threat of the resurgence of Islamist extremism.

Two electoral commission offices holding voting materials were burned down within the space of a week, the nation’s electoral body said on Sunday.

Nigeria’s Independent Electoral Commission said that more than 10,000 voters’ cards and 755 ballot boxes were destroyed in fires in Abia and Plateau states.

On Monday police reported  that five people had been killed in south-east Nigeria in clashes between supporters of the two main political parties.

Islamist groups are on the rise in parts of Nigeria again despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s vow to eliminate Boko Haram.

Last month the north-eastern town of Baga was under fire from Isis-linked extremists, one example of the resurgence of jihadist groups since late last year.

Information Minister Lai Mohammed declared: “Isis now has a strong foothold in West Africa, with Nigeria in the forefront of the battle,” causing more worry than Boko Haram due to its tripling in size.
