Syria-Lebanon border clashes prove fatal

HEAVY clashes along the Syria-Lebanon border killed several people today, including a number of Hezbollah fighters and Syrian rebels.

Syrian government troops backed by Hezbollah have been on the offensive in Syria’s mountainous Qalamoun region, trying to clear it of opposition forces.

It has captured most towns and villages there but hundreds of rebels remain active in the region.

The latest clashes broke out on Sunday after Syrian rebels tried to infiltrate Lebanon and clashed with Hezbollah fighters.

Fighting near the Lebanese village of Youneen ended at dawn yesterday after Hezbollah took control of nearby hills.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Hezbollah fighters had captured 14 rebels but that the fighting had left seven Hezbollah fighters dead and 31 wounded against 17 rebels killed and 23 wounded.

Syrian Red Crescent trucks loaded with 1,000 food parcels entered the rebel-held Damascus suburb of Moadamiyeh with government agreement today.
