Russia to send in second aid convoy

MOSCOW will send a second humanitarian aid convoy into rebel-held eastern Ukraine in coming days.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that an official note was sent to the Ukrainian foreign ministry with information about the next convoy with humanitarian aid, including details about its planned contents.
Russia sent 230 lorries carrying 1,800 tons of humanitarian aid to the rebel-held Ukrainian city of Lugansk last Friday after accusing Kiev of delaying the mission.
The lorries returned to Russia on Saturday without incident.
“We would like to agree on the conditions to send the convoy on the same route with the same participation of Ukrainian border guards and customs officers as soon as possible,” said Mr Lavrov.
“This needs to be done this week,” he said.
“The humanitarian situation is not improving but deteriorating.”
However, a deteriorating situation had not affected the spirits of the population at the weekend.
In Donetsk, thousands gathered in the main square as the rebels held a parade in which dozens of captive soldiers were marched past while thousands of locals jeered and abused them, shouting “fascists” and “hang them from a tree,” while pelting them with eggs and tomatoes.
Two water trucks followed the captives, hosing down the road to cleanse the pavement where the Ukrainian soldiers had passed.
The image had historical parallels: In 1944, Red Army soldiers hosed down the streets after parading German prisoners of war through Moscow’s streets.
