The racing looks tough enough this weekend from a punter’s perspective and with the uncertainty surrounding the weather we need to tread carefully through the punting maze.
The most valuable race of the day is the £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint, the 3.50 at Newbury, and Queen Mary runner-up Tiggy Wiggy has obvious claims here as the Hannon yard seek their first victory in the race since 2009.
Any rain would definitely suit her as she was outpaced in the middle of that Royal Ascot race before running on strongly.
However, she has to give weight all round and I would much rather have an each-way wager on Fast Act.
Kevin Ryan’s charge was well fancied for his debut at Leicester and although he wasn’t disgraced in fifth spot it transpired that he pulled a few muscles. Given a break he made no mistake second time around at Carlisle.
The furious gallop of this contest should suit him down to the ground and I expect him to hit the frame at the very least granted some decent luck in running.
Of the other runners, Harry’s Dancer, Pillar Box and Secret Spirit are also respected.
The second of those showed bundles of speed to win on his second outing at Bath and looks made for this race.
Earlier on, I fancy a huge run from Music Master in the Group Three Hackwood Stakes at 2.40.
Slight easing in the ground wouldn’t be a problem for this grand specimen of a sprinter and this is obviously a lot easier than the Diamond Jubilee last time out in which he finished a fine fourth despite racing away from the first three home.
Connections of Fury will be hoping that the anticipated showers materialise in the 1.50 at Newmarket. The now six-year-old figures off a very handy mark of 92 these days and gets the nod over the likes of the in-form Llanarmon Lad and bottom weight Tanseeb.
At Newmarket, Mar Mar (3.40) has her easiest task for some time against her own sex, while the highly progressive Agent Murphy gets the nod over the lightly weighted Earl of Monteith in the finale at 5.20.
It’s a huge day of jumping action at Market Rasen and the main event of the day, the Summer Plate Handicap Chase at 3.30, looks a wide open affair.
It is interesting that Dan Skelton is stepping up Woodbank significantly in trip for this valuable contest but I am not sure he will be able to deal with top weight Vulcanite, winner of his last two races and on only his seventh chase start still on the upgrade.
The best bet on the evening cards could come courtesy of Rex Whistler in the 9.00 at Haydock. Julie Camacho’s charge remains a maiden but down to a mark of 85.
With fair course and distance form to his name, he should go close granted some easing in the ground.
