World demands an end to Gaza horror

PEACE activists rallied across the world today to demand the end of the Israeli blitz on Gaza.

From inside Israel itself to the furthest reaches of South America, marchers expressed their horror and abhorrence at the murderous assault.

Inside Israel, the Islamic Movement led a demonstration in Tamra on Saturday which drew 10,000 Israeli Arabs waving Palestine Liberation Organisation flags and holding pictures of atrocities.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, thousands of marchers rallied in Dublin to press for an end to the violence.

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign called on people to boycott Israel in a march which started at the Garden of Remembrance and finished on St Stephen’s Green.

Marchers chanted: “Free Palestine, free Gaza,” while protesters carried signs which read: “Stop the slaughter, end the siege” and “Boycott Israeli goods, stop the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.”

It was supported by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, general union Siptu, Trade Union Friends of Palestine and many other groups.

Protests were aso held in Cork, Derry, Limerick, Galway, Armagh and Sligo calling for an arms embargo on Israel, a ban on the import of Israeli goods and to expel the Israeli ambassador to Ireland.

In the US, thousands marched to the White House on Saturday afternoon. “Free, free Palestine, killing children is a crime,” the crowd chanted.

The event was organised online by more than 40 groups and many arrived by bus from Chicago and New York, while others drove from as far away as Florida.

And, further south, many thousands marched in Chile’s capital Santiago, urging President Michelle Bachelet to break off diplomatic relations with Israel.

“Break it off, break it off, break off ties with Israel,” chanted demonstrators who marched to the presidential palace.

Chile has already has recalled its ambassador to Israel, as have Argentina, El Salvador and Peru.

In the US, Congress passed emergency legislation late on Friday granting $225 million (£135m) to replenish Israel’s missile stocks by a 395-8 vote in favour.

But on the world’s streets at the weekend, angry and grieving protesters sent a very different message to Israel’s murderous government.
