THE Co-operative announced yesterday it would give £5 million to farming groups which supply its fresh meat, poultry and milk.
The five groups were launched last year to maintain the Co-op’s animal welfare policies and back British farmers.
Co-op Group food retail chief executive Steve Murrells said the schemes had “delivered significant benefits to farmers, the Co-operative and its customers” and said the farmers were now “starting to reap their just rewards.”
National Farmers Union president Meurig Raymond applauded the Co-op’s policy and said it was “a positive step for the industry.”
It helped foster a better relationship between farmers and retailers and guaranteed “more British food on more British plates,” he added.
