Bangladeshi hunger strikers threaten to spark mass walkout

BANGLADESHI hunger strikers warned on Wednesday that they would call on garment workers to strike nationally from Sunday if demands for unpaid wages remained unmet.

More than 1,600 workers at garment manufacturer Tuba Group have been on hunger strike since July 28 because they have not been paid for three months.

They are demanding payment of their salaries, three months of overtime and bonuses.

The workers produce garments for international football federation Fifa.

Tuba Group managing director Delwar Hossain had been in jail since February 2014 for his role in the 2012 Tazreen factory fire, but was bailed on Tuesday.

Hunger strikers had been camping out in one of the factories but police entered the building on Wednesday and evicted activists who had joined the workers in solidarity.

Authorities have since stopped the supply of food and saline to the workers, who are continuing their fast.
