POLISH Deputy Digital Affairs Minister Adam Andruszkiewicz has complained of a “slanderous witch-hunt” by opponents of his appointment on the grounds of his homophobic and anti-semitic record.
Mr Andruszkiewicz is a former leader of the All Polish Youth league, a resurrected organisation originating in the 1930s where it campaigned for Jewish segregation. Now part of the far-right National Movement, it focuses on opposition to immigrants and gay marriage and has organised counter-demonstrations to gay rights marches where members chant: “Gas the fags” and “We’ll do to you what Hitler did to the Jews.” Members are frequently accused of making anti-semitic remarks.
Former Anti-Defamation League director Abraham Foxman said Poland had put “a neonazi anti-semite in charge of social media.”
Mr Andruszkiewicz says he has not made any anti-semitic or homophobic remarks in his capacity as a minister, and therefore the controversy around his appointment is overblown.
