New Zealand: Trade unions call for action against rising wealth gap

THE New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (CTU) called for action yesterday to close the widening gap between rich and poor.

It said that far too many workers were unable to provide for themselves and their families and were missing out on getting ahead because wealth is being concentrated at the top.

The federation cited a survey of chief executive salaries by the New Zealand Herald newspaper that showed they had risen by 10 per cent last year while many workers received no pay rise.

“Low wages in New Zealand are a huge part of the story of inequality. The excessive gap between ordinary workers and those at the very top of the economic pile is making things worse,” said CTU secretary Sam Huggard.

Mr Huggard pointed out that half of New Zealand’s households received no more income in real terms than a generation ago.
