Nicola Sturgeon welcomes Scotland-EU admission

SCOTTISH Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon welcomed an admission yesterday by senior Labour MEP David Martin that an independent Scotland “would get into the EU.”

Mr Martin, a former vice president of the European parliament, said: “My view is that Scotland, of course, would get into the EU eventually.

“It’s not automatic and would take several rounds of negotiations, but they are not going to force us to join Schengen — and they’re not going to force us to join the Euro.”

Ms Sturgeon said: “We see more and more people, including David Martin, saying that is the common sense argument.”

But the SNP-Labour consensus on the EU was slammed by No2EU Scottish list candidate Richie Veitch.

“No2EU is the only political platform in these elections opposing the EU from the left,” he said.

“We support public ownership, we oppose austerity cuts and we believe all workers need to be protected by strong trade unions and collective bargaining rights.

“None of this can be achieved inside the EU.”
