Teesside market town votes to rejoin North Yorkshire

THE people of Yarm have overwhelmingly voted to cast off the shackles of Stockton-on-Tees Council and return to the bosom of their Yorkshire brethren.

The Teesside town was part of North Yorkshire until being controversially absorbed by the unitary Borough of Stockton-on-Tees in the local government upheavals of the 1970s.

A massive 1,465 people — 89 per cent — voted to rip Yarm from Teesside, with only 177 opting to spurn Yorkshire on a 24 per cent turnout.

The campaign to return to Yorkshire has been bubbling away in Yarm for years but the issue has reached boiling point as the town council has been locked in dispute with Stockton over issues like parking and cobbles.

The vote was non-binding.
