FOOTBALL: Three Gillingham fans have been arrested by police investigating alleged racist chanting at Rotherham's Scottish manager Steve Evans during his side's 4-3 League One win at Priestfield.

Police said the men, aged 24, 27 and 57, had been held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and freed on police bail until May 7.

 

 

ATHLETICS: Yesterday's Sheffield half-marathon was cancelled at the last minute with organisers blaming problems getting hold of water.

There was a furious response to the announcement on social media as Facebook commenters condemned "shambolic" organisation.

Police said a large number of competitors still ran the race.

 

 

BOXING: A gruesome eye injury proved the undoing of Enzo Maccarinelli as he failed in his bid to wrest the WBA light-heavyweight title from Juergen Braehmer on Saturday.

The Welshman suffered a heavily swollen right eye in the first round but battled on to the end of the fifth when his trainer Gary Lockett told the referee: "I can't let him go on, not with his face like that."

 

 

FOOTBALL: Leicester were promoted to the Premier League on Saturday after defeats for rivals QPR and Derby.

The Foxes end a 10-year absence from the top flight after their 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday was followed by QPR's 2-1 loss at Bournemouth and a 1-0 defeat for Derby at Middlesbrough.

 

 

FOOTBALL: Striker Nicolas Anelka has joined Atletico Mineiro, the Brazilian club's president said yesterday.

Anelka was sacked by West Brom last month over his use of the "quenelle" gesture.
