Labour ‘not shying away from dangerous ideas’

SCOTTISH Labour will no longer “shy away from dangerous ideas,” the leader of the party’s youth wing said in a rousing speech yesterday.

Scottish Young Labour chairman Liam Gleeson said he welcomed a wholesale shift in the politics of the party under the leadership of Richard Leonard.

“We want to work with the party but deserve to be taken seriously,” Mr Gleeson said. “We don’t want to return to the days where the leader’s office would shout down the phone at young members.

“Young people were at the forefront of Richard Leonard’s campaign. It is Richard’s socialist vision that motivates us today.”

In contrast, after last year’s Scottish Labour conference, Mr Gleeson was quoted as saying he felt “dejected by the whole experience.”

He stormed: “It’s the role of young people to be iconoclastic and to challenge the status quo. It is the role of young people to fight for marginalised groups to ensure working-class voices are heard.”
