Fans voice their anger as Hammers crash out writes Simon Williams

Sam Allardyce suffered a tirade of abuse from West Ham United fans as his side exited the FA Cup at the hands of West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

The Baggies progressed to the the quarter-finals of the the cup for the first time since 2008 with record signing Brown Ideye striking either side of half-time, with James Morrison and Saido Berahino also finding the back of the net.

West Ham substitute Morgan Amalfitano was sent off for clashing with Albion’s Chris Brunt.

But during the second-half the 5,000 travelling supporters, who had packed the Smethwick End at The Hawthorns, turned and began chanting “Fuck off Sam Allardyce” and “You don’t know what you’re doing” in the direction of the away dugout.

After the game Allardyce  shrugged off the criticism, saying: “You do your job professionally. When fans are happy they cheer, applaud you and say how well you’ve done. When fans are not so happy they show disappointment and it’s the same across the board all the way across the country today.

“My professional job as the manager is to deal with the players, get them out on the pitch, entertain the fans and keep them winning which is what we’ve done for 85-90 per cent of this season.”

And with May’s final at Wembley within touching distance, Allardyce was disappointed to leave the competition at this stage considering the number of “big” clubs that have fallen in previous rounds.

He said: “Has anybody identified why there were so many shocks in the third round? It’s because they (the Premier League teams) had to play on the Thursday and the Football League teams didn’t have to play on Thursday because they were all off.

“So you get the big shocks on the Saturday because all the Premier League clubs were playing on New Year’s Day and all the Football League clubs weren’t playing.

“It had given us a another boost that the big teams had got knocked out. But it was just too far for us today. We copped it today and not New Year’s Day.”
