Suarez scoops top player prize

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has capped an outstanding season by scooping the Professional Footballers Association Player of the Year award.

The Uruguay international picked up the gong after the Reds 2-0 defeat by Chelsea on Sunday.

Only a year ago Suarez was starting a 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic.

But he’s scored 30 league goals in 31 appearances this season and been the driving force behind Liverpool’s (slightly dented) title hopes.

Suarez said: “The Premier League is full of really great players and so it is a great honour when these players recognise your work on the pitch.

“I always try my best for the team and it is nice to get awards but really this is for my team-mates and the staff at Liverpool because without their help I wouldn’t have this prize.”

Manager Brendan Rodgers said he had been “the consistently outstanding player over the course of the last year.”

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard — who spent last year kicking ball boys on the ground — won the Young Player of the Year award.

The Merseyside club also produced the female Player of the Year and female Young Player of the Year.

Lucy Bronze took the second-ever PFA female gong with team-mate Martha Harris taking the youth prize.

Bronze helped Liverpool win the FA Women’s Super League title last season.
