YOUNG trade union activists protested outside Caffe Nero in Dundee yesterday over the coffee chain’s bad employment practices.
Members of the STUC’s Better than Zero campaign, which seeks to end zero-hours contracts and poverty pay, are targeting Caffe Nero over the firm’s decision to axe its workforce’s entitlement to free lunches in order to compensate for the cost of Chancellor George Osborne’s “living wage.”
Caffe Nero, which made a pre-tax profit of £21.1 million in 2014, is one of many low-wage firms trying to cancel out the meagre rise in the minimum wage by attacking workers’ conditions.
The STUC Congress passed a motion committing to more practical support for Better than Zero, backing to future mobilisations by the Fast Food Rights Campaign and to fight to abolish zero-hours contracts and win a true living wage for all.
