ARSENAL became the first Premier League side to donate revenue from today’s fixture against Stoke to support victims of the refugee crisis, it was revealed yesterday.
The Gunners are set to donate £1 from every ticket sold for the game against the Potters.
All English sides competing in this season’s Champions League and Europa League have agreed to back the Uefa-wide effort that will see the 80 teams competing donating €1 per ticket from their first home games in those competitions to help the refugee crisis.
But while the Premier League has agreed to advertise Save the Children’s appeal at this weekend’s games the majority of solidarity action has been organised by fans’ groups, with banners set to adorn the stands of a number of clubs up and down the country.
In contrast, in Germany every club has pledged to donate €1 from every ticket at this weekend’s games and a number of German sides will set foot on the fields hand-in-hand with a refugee mascot.
Bayern Munich led the way last week agreeing to donate €1 million recieved from a summer friendly to the cause and annoucing their plans to set up a training camp for refugees.
A number of other sides gave away tickets to enable refugees to attend Bundesliga games and rebel club Saint Pauli have launched a campaign to collect donations and essentials.
