Steelworkers and families stage vigil to save SSI

HUNDREDS of steelworkers, their families and supporters staged a torchlit vigil last night demanding the government help to save their plant and 3,000 jobs.

They called on Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne to reverse their refusal of a £100 million emergency loan which could save the steelworks.

Production has been suspended at SSI steelworks at Redcar in Teesside.

The Thai-owned firm has hit financial difficulties.

Supplies of materials to the factory have been halted, bringing suspension of production.

At 7.30pm last night demonstrators turned on torches and mobile phones in a symbolic demand to “keep the light burning on Teesside.”

GMB regional organiser Michael Blench said: “This vigil is to get the wider community on Teesside to ramp up the pressure on Cameron to step in and save this plant.”
