World in brief: January 15, 2025

GERMANY: Police said today they were investigating a far-right party’s election campaign flyer that looks like an airliner boarding pass and calls for the deportation of “illegal immigrants.”

The flyer was published on the website of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s Karlsruhe branch and reads “only remigration can still save Germany.” It's dated February 23, when a general election is due to be held.

TANZANIA: A  suspected outbreak of Marburg disease has killed eight people in a remote part of the country’s north, the World Health Organisation said today.

“We are aware of nine cases so far, including eight people who have died,” WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. “We would expect further cases in coming days as disease surveillance improves.”

MOZAMBIQUE: Hundreds of opposition supporters protested today as Daniel Chapo was inaugurated as the new president following disputed elections and deadly unrest.

They staged a peaceful protest  after security forces blocked them from reaching the venue.

SOUTH AFRICA: Rescuers and volunteers have pulled at least 78 dead miners and more than 160 survivors from an abandoned goldmine, it was reported today.

The miners have languished underground for months during a stand-off with authorities, who demanded that they surrender to police because they were mining illegally.

Hundreds were still believed to be trapped today and the death toll is expected to rise from a disaster that has focused criticism on the government’s decision to try to “smoke them out” by cutting off food and other supplies.
