Rail workers hit out at franchising

RAIL workers will come out in force at Manchester’s demonstration tomorrow to protest about government plans to slash jobs, cut services and worsen safety standards on northern English trains.

They will follow Sunday’s protest with a series of demonstrations targeting northern railway stations.

Rail union RMT is waging a campaign of opposition to renewed franchising of Northern Rail and Transpennine Express, which it says will mean inevitable cuts, such as removing conductors from trains.

RMT is targeting dozens of stations and warning thousands of passengers of the plans.

“Thousands of decent rail jobs will be under threat, deskilled and casualised,” said RMT general secretary Mick Cash.

“Cuts to rail jobs are always a false economy and make a nonsense of the government’s hot air about a northern powerhouse. We will be there right on their doorstep on Sunday.”

Members of posties’ union CWU will also hit the Tory conference to campaign against the privatisation of postal services.

As well as joining Sunday’s protest, the union is staging a rally for a People’s Post on Monday night, which will be addressed by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Tickets for the event at Manchester Cathedral have already sold out.

“The level of interest in this event clearly shows that a movement is building in our country that calls for a different kind of politics,” said CWU general secretary Dave Ward.

“The CWU is central to this movement, as is protecting the UK’s postal services.”

  • The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament will form a Scrap Trident bloc outside the Tory conference to highlight Trident’s £100 billion renewal pricetag.
