UN PEACEKEEPERS have refused to work in a new campaign against Rwandan rebels with two Democratic Republic of Congo generals accused of abuses.
The refusal came because Congolese authorities had not investigated the allegations, said UN envoy Martin Kobler on Thursday.
Under the UN due diligence policy, it has to ensure its support does not contribute to human rights violations.
The UN had planned a joint military campaign against Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda rebels, which includes former soldiers and Hutu militia responsible for Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.
However, the UN mission withdrew its support for the planned offensive after Congo appointed two generals at the last moment who were on the UN red list, which signifies allegations of human rights abuses.
