ISRAEL carried out another deadly attack on a school in Gaza today, killing at least 27 people, Palestinian medical officials said.

With the death toll from the attack in Deir al-Balah likely to grow,  Israel has continued to claim it is targeting Hamas fighters.

The deadly attack comes a day after the United Nations warned that proposed new legislation before the Israeli parliament could destroy all humanitarian operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where the bodies from today’s onslaught were brought, said injuries to others may well see the death toll rising further.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli Defence Force. 

Hamas has continued to launch attacks on Israeli forces and fire occasional rockets into Israel more than a year after its surprise October 7 assault.

During the attack 1,200 people were killed and around 250 others were taken hostage. They are still holding around 100 captives.

Israel’s retaliation has killed well over 42,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to local health authorities. 

The war has destroyed large areas of Gaza and displaced around 90 per cent of its population of 2.3 million people, often multiple times.

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees warned on Wednesday that if pending Israeli legislation is adopted, all humanitarian operations in Gaza and the West Bank may “disintegrate,” leaving hundreds of thousands of people in dire need.

Philippe Lazzarini told the UN security council that senior Israeli officials are bent on destroying the UN body known as UNRWA, which is the main provider of humanitarian aid in Gaza.

An Israeli parliamentary committee approved a pair of Bills this week that would ban UNRWA from operating in Israeli territory and end all contact between the government and the UN agency. 

The Bill needs final approval from the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

Mr Lazzarini said: “Legally, the Knesset legislation violates Israel’s obligation under the United Nations Charter and international law.”

Israel has alleged that some of UNRWA’s thousands of staff members participated in last year’s October 7 attack. 

Israeli UN ambassador Danny Danon told the security council that Hamas infiltration of UNRWA “is so ingrained, so institutional, that the organisation is simply beyond repair.”

It was reported on Wednesday that the sister of Morning Star contributor Dr Ramzy Baroud, Dr Soma Baroud, was one of six people killed by an Israeli bomb attack on the taxi in Khan Yunis they were travelling in.
