THE watchdog Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been branded “not fit for purpose” after it decided there should be no investigation into the police’s brutal attack on striking miners at Orgreave in Yorkshire.
The attack, on June 18 1984, was one of the 20th century’s most notorious examples of state violence against workers.
The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, which wants a public inquiry into what happened, waited for two years for the IPCC to decide whether or not an investigation should take place.
Last week, it ruled against a probe.
Warrington North Labour MP and former shadow justice minister Helen Jones told the Commons the decision caused “deep concern” about the commission.
She said it “calls into question whether the IPCC is fit for purpose.”
The campaign is continuing to press for a public inquiry into what happened at Orgreave.
