Two killed in massive munitions dump blast

TWO people have been reported dead after a huge blast destroyed a Ukrainian arsenal on Thursday night.

The explosion occurred in Svatove in a Kiev-controlled area of the eastern Lugansk region, near the front line with anti-fascist rebels.

Local media reported that the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) was treating the explosion as a terrorist act after Lugansk’s Kiev-appointed civil-military administration claimed that two flares had been fired at the ammunition dump.

“Shell fragments are bursting near the scene right in the town. A shop building has been hit,” Deputy Administration Head Yury Klimenko told reporters, adding that 35 buildings had been damaged.

Svatove Mayor Evgeniy Rybalko said that a female shop worker and a man had been killed and that four people had been wounded.

A Ukrainian soldier was trapped beneath the rubble.

According to the Kyiv Post, Lugansk administration head Heorhiy Tuka has allocated 10 billion hryvnia (£280 million) to clear up the remains of the 3 kilotons of munitions stored at the arsenal.
