Romania: Nato shifts HQ eastwards as Russia tensions mount

NATO announced yesterday that it will move its joint force command headquarters to Romania amid rising tensions with Russia.

US Admiral Mark Ferguson said the command will relocate to Cincu, in mountainous central Romania, for 12 days in June to support an exercise involving 1,000 troops from 21 Nato states.

“This deployment will be the first time a Nato joint force command headquarters has deployed to Romania,” Adm Ferguson said in Bucharest during a two-day visit.

Some 350 general-staff members will be transferred to the temporary HQ, where they will practise co-ordinating multinational operations.

Adm Ferguson said the exercises were “defensive in nature and are focused on enhancing our interoperability, readiness and responsiveness.”

Romania has a coast on the Black Sea, as do Ukraine and Russia.

At the same time, Nato and the US will conduct exercises in Poland, the Baltics and the Baltic Sea — all on Russia’s borders.
