Guarimba victims call on rights council for justice

VICTIMS of last year’s violent right-wing attempt to overthrow Venezuela’s government demanded justice from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Saturday.

The Committee of Guarimba Victims delivered a detailed report on the riots and street barricades — “guarimba” — by US-backed opposition forces that left 43 people dead.

It detailed how 29 people were shot dead, nine while trying to clear barricades, and seven people were killed by booby traps at the blockades.

The families described how steel wire was strung across roads to knock down — or behead — those who tried to get through the barricades on motorcycles.

“A retired general put the instructions for such a criminal action on Twitter,” they said.

The report called on UNHRC president Joachim Ruecker to support the families’ campaign for justice and condemn opposition leaders who encouraged the violence.

Venezuela was re-elected to the UNHRC late last month despite strenuous objections from US ally Israel.
