10 grabbed in raids on pro-jihadist network

FRENCH police launched raids across the country early today in an effort to dismantle a network allegedly sending jihadist fighters to Syria.

Elite anti-terror police units swooped on about a dozen targets, mostly in the region of Toulouse, but also around Paris and in Normandy.

Police arrested at least 10 suspects.

In recent months France, which has Europe’s largest Muslim population, has seen an estimated 1,000 of its citizens openly joining jihadist groups in Iraq and Syria. Around 400 are thought to be fighting there now and almost 50 have been killed.

A video from the Islamic State (Isis) group released in mid-November showed three Kalashnikov-wielding Frenchmen burning their passports and calling on Muslims to join them or stage attacks in France.
