Diouf piles more pressure on Baggies boss writes SIMON WILLIAMS

Pressure continues to mount on West Bromwich Albion Head Coach Alan Irvine after his side lost 2-0 to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium yesterday.

Irvine, who has guided the Baggies to just one win in their last nine Premier League matches, saw his side fall behind to a Mame Diouf goal in the 51st minute.

Diouf’s deflected shot 15 minutes later added more pressure on the former Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End manager who was greeted by loud boos from the away fans as he made his way down the touchline at the final whistle.

Having said that he feared for his job in the build-up to the game, Irvine must now believe he is the next Premier League manager to be shown the door after Crystal Palace parted company with Neil Warnock on Saturday.

The odds were stacked against the Baggies from the start with them having only won one of their last 15 games against Stoke.

However the deadlock was finally broken early into the second-half when Diouf, who was left unchallenged in the box, fired the ball past Ben Foster to give his side the lead.

The visitors had a chance to level at 1-1 but Asmir Begovic thwarted Gareth McAuley.

And as a chorus of “you don’t know what you’re doing” rang out from the the travelling West Brom fans Diouf doubled his side’s lead.

Poor defending again from the visitors gave Bojan time to square the the ball to Marko Arnautovic who’s shot cannonned off Diouf and past a helpless Foster.

Substitute Saido Berahino, who is reportedly being lined up for a potential move to either Liverpool or Tottenham in the January transfer window, was lively for the visitors after his introduction but failed to really threaten Begovic’s goal.

Irvine has a difficult trip to London to take on West Ham on New Year’s Day, although it is unsure whether he will hang on to his job.
