SACKED workers rallied outside a Glasgow hotel today to demand answers — and thousands of pounds in unpaid wages.
Workers at the flagship 240-room Virgin Hotel on the banks of the river Clyde gathered after operator V Hotel Glasgow Limited went into administration and made 134 staff redundant.
The hotel staff are owed substantial sums in unpaid wages, as well as service charges, and now Unite’s hospitality branch has launched a campaign to get what they are owed.
Speaking at the rally, Unite hospitality’s Bryan Smith told the Star that the union would not only be fighting for missing wages, but would also be pursuing a legal claim for a protective award, which would secure workers three months’ wages.
He said: “They flew in their CEO yesterday from Miami to inform 134 workers that they were terminated with immediate effect.
“He even had the audacity to ask them to do some light duties after that, after telling them he didn’t know if they’d be paid.
“So we're here outside Virgin Hotel to send a clear message not only to the direct employer but to the management company: these workers need to be paid.
“They need to be paid for the whole of December, and they need the thousands of pounds of service charges still owed.
“I’m told the kitchen alone on Saturday took £35,000. Where is that money?
“Our message to Virgin is quite clear: we want the wages to be paid, we want the service charged and the tips to be paid.”
In a statement, the Virgin Group said: "Virgin Hotels is very disappointed by this decision after the hard work everyone has put into the hotel and because of the impact it will have on the team that works there.”
