Graduate tax rejected by students

A LABOUR promise replace university fees with a graduate tax is a “cynical” political strategy, student campaigners claimed yesterday.

This weekend’s remarks by shadow universities minister Liam Byrne were given a frosty reception by free education activists.

Mr Byrne revealed that Labour would replace annual £9,000 tuition fees with a tax, deducted from graduates’ salaries.

“Labour is cynically latching on to the clear want for a different funding system,” said Hattie Craig of the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.

“We will not stop until we win free education, funded not by a graduate tax but by progressive taxation.”
