Thousands left homeless after earthquakes in Afghanistan

THOUSANDS have been left homeless after the earthquakes in Afghanistan, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

The UN said that a bleak winter awaited thousands of Afghans who have been left without shelter after the devastating earthquakes that shook the province of Herat, in the west of the country.

“The earthquakes have caused at least 1,400 deaths and injuries and have devastated entire towns,” the UN said.

The UN said that it has asked for $93.6 million from donors to provide help to the 114,000 people affected by the earthquake in the province of Herat.

World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan spokesman Philippe Kropf said: “These are communities that can barely feed themselves and each of these crises returns them to total misery.”

Mr Kropf said: “These earthquakes come at a time when 15 million people, almost a third of the Afghan population, do not know where their next meal will come from.”

The WFP has said that it has been “forced to withdraw food aid from 10 million people this year due to a huge funding gap.”

The latest earthquake on October 15, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, left four dead and 153 injured with the epicentre of this earthquake occurring around 21 miles from Herat.
