Former Pakistan PM Khan appeals against three-year prison sentence

PAKISTAN’S former prime minister Imran Khan has appealed against his conviction and three-year prison sentence, a spokesman for his legal team said.

The Islamabad High Court is due to hear the appeal today.

It is the latest turn in Mr Khan’s legal drama after being ousted in a no-confidence vote in April 2022. He remains the country’s leading opposition figure.

He was convicted and jailed on Saturday on charges of concealing assets after selling state gifts he received while in power. The former cricket star has denied the charges, saying he did not violate any laws.

Since Mr Khan's conviction, his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and critics have said the former premier has been victimised by the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Mr Sharif replaced Mr Khan as PM last year and is likely to step down on Wednesday after the five-year term of the current parliament.

By Pakistani law, Mr Khan will only be allowed to contest the election if his conviction is overturned.
