Hunter: RFU must act on professional contracts

England’s Rugby World Cup-winning vice-captain Sarah Hunter has warned that unless the women’s team become professional they could be left behind.

Sunday’s victory over Canada, in which half their opponents are full-time rugby sevens players, has opened up the debate that the England team should be handed full-time contracts.

“If other nations turn professional and move forward we might get left behind,” said Hunter.

“For now, it’s all about making sure the players have the support in place to make their lives easier and add value.

“But we need to make sure the debate doesn’t take away from the achievement of actually winning a World Cup.”

Captain Katy Mclean, who is a primary school teacher, added: “There’s a huge marketing profile now for the game’s authorities to work with.

“I’m sure the Rugby Football Union are already busy talking about it.”
