World in brief: August 6, 2023

PAKISTAN: At least 30 passengers were killed and 60 more injured when a train derailed near the Pakistani town of Nawabshah in southern Sindh province, officials said today.

The Hazara Express was on its way from Karachi to Rawalpindi when 10 cars derailed near the Sarhari railway station off Nawabshah, said senior railway officer Mahmoodur Rehman Lakho. 

ITALY: At least two people have been killed and more than 30 are thought to be missing after two ships carrying migrants sank today off the coast of Italy.

The UN International Organisation for Migration said that the two boats from the Tunisian port of Sfax had been carrying about 90 people between them.

Italian authorities said they were investigating the shipwrecks.

UNITED STATES: A shooting on a street in the nation’s capital left three people dead and two others hospitalised on Saturday night, Washington DC police said.

Officers responded to the sounds of gunshots at 8pm in the 1600 block of Good Hope Road Southeast and found five victims who had been shot.

Two men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
