RETAIL giant Wal-Mart promised yesterday to raise the wages of half a million of its staff in the next six months.
The shopping chain, notorious for its rock-bottom pay and poor working conditions, said it would raise entry-level pay to $9 (£5.83) an hour in April and to $10 (£6.47) by next February.
That would raise the pay of around 40 per cent of the company’s workforce — but falls far short of the $15 (£9.71) demanded by unions who have backed repeated protests and walkouts over the past year.
National Employment Law Project director Christine Owens gave credit to the workers for the planned rises.
